What microdosing means
There is no single scientific definition. A commonly cited dried-mushroom range is 0.05 to 0.25 grams, but whole mushrooms vary, and an amount intended to be subtle may still be noticeable. “Sub-perceptual” is an intention, not a guarantee.
Microdosing should not be treated as a harmless supplement habit. Psilocybin remains federally illegal, workplace and driving risks still apply, and repeated exposure has not been studied well enough to define long-term safety.

Fadiman and Stamets protocols
| Protocol | Commonly described schedule | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Fadiman | One dose day, then two days without; repeat | Designed to leave observation days between uses. Not a proven treatment schedule. |
| Stamets stack | Often described as four days on, three days off, combined with lion’s mane and niacin | The combination is not clinically validated. Niacin can cause flushing and other risks. |
People modify these schedules widely. That makes anecdotal results hard to compare and increases the importance of recording the exact material, amount, timing, sleep, other substances, and baseline mood.
04
What the evidence actually shows
Observational studies often find that people who choose to microdose report better mood or function. Those designs cannot separate the substance from expectancy, selection effects, lifestyle changes, and reporting bias.
Blinded and placebo-controlled work has generally produced smaller or less consistent differences. The fairest summary is that the subject remains worth studying, while claims of reliable creativity, focus, or antidepressant effects are ahead of the evidence.
05
How to track without grading your own hopes
Write down a baseline before starting: sleep, anxiety, mood, focus, headache, caffeine, alcohol, cannabis, and major life events. Use the same short measures on dose and non-dose days. Decide in advance what change would be meaningful and what adverse effect would make you stop.
Do not add several new supplements, habits, or productivity systems at once. A journal can reveal patterns, but it cannot diagnose a condition or prove causation.
06
Risks people tend to minimize
- Unexpected impairment, anxiety, headache, nausea, or sleep disruption.
- Medication interactions, especially lithium and complex psychiatric or cardiac regimens.
- Mania or psychosis risk in susceptible people.
- Legal, employment, driving, custody, immigration, or housing consequences.
- Product identity and potency uncertainty, particularly in unverified edibles.
FAQ
Common questions
Is a microdose supposed to be imperceptible?+
It is usually intended to be sub-perceptual or barely noticeable, but there is no universal definition. A small amount can still affect mood, attention, coordination, or anxiety.
Does microdosing improve productivity?+
Controlled research has not established a dependable productivity benefit. Expectancy and placebo effects are important in this area.
Is the Stamets stack proven?+
No. Combining psilocybin, lion’s mane, and niacin is a popular protocol, not a clinically validated treatment. Niacin can cause flushing and other adverse effects.
